THE BRIEF
“To design and paint an immersive 8 ft x 4.5 ft indoor mural for the newly renovated Headley Sports Pavilion main entrance area, commissioned by Headley Parish Council.”
Headley Parish Council wanted the mural to create a cohesive visual story reflecting the past, present, and future of Headley. Blending local history, natural heritage, and community spirit into a single, idealistic landscape - a "Dream Version of Headley."
THE CHALLENGE
Painting on a flat interior wall often risks feeling disconnected from the room. The challenge was to integrate the mural into the building structure without visually clashing with existing window frames or interior trimmings.
The client educated us on specific points in local history to include. These included but were not limited to, a Canadian WW2 tank regiment, a rich local music history, historical sports fixtures / active sports played on site, traditional village life and modern community events. In the centre of the village sits a large, iconic chestnut tree, even included in the council logo.
The composition needed to resonate with older locals whilst remaining visually engaging, fun, and relatable for children, sports players, and casual visitors.
THE SOLUTION
To enable the mural to fit seamlessly into the pavilion's structure, the composition was framed as a interior window outlook. The painted window frame and window sill were colour-matched and aligned with the interior framing, mantel and trim of the building, creating an optical illusion that the viewer is looking straight out onto Headley's landscape.
Merging the extensive history of Headley in one piece could easily look chaotic if not balanced carefully around a central anchor. For this, we chose to use the iconic chestnut tree that sits at the heart of the village. This naturally split the scene into distinct zones whilst uniting the entire artwork under a single canopy. We have included select items in the foreground to add to the illusion.
THE SOLUTION
To ensure we highlighted every point the council and community wanted included, the design has been packed with local references for historians and children to identify and receive a fun, visually engaging local history lesson into their local area. We included as requested:
The Iconic Headley Chestnut Tree. The two local pubs, “The Holly Bush” & “The Crown”. The Canadian Tank Regiment stationed locally in WW2. On site cricket / tennis / petanqué / boules / football. Corné, France - Headley’s sister city. The ”local celebrity” white geese. Local fuller's vale wildlife pond. All Saints Church, Headley. The Local Headley Water Mill. The “Here’s Headley” Annual Fete. The local Headley Grange music recording studio. Hosted Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac in the 1970s. Fleetwood Mac Records. References to Led Zeppelin songs. The Stairway to Heaven, Black Dog.
All design elements have been positioned in a way to sit in a visually pleasing fashion. These were to be hand painted with technical precision and appropriate colours to sell the windowsill illusion. The foreground props were painted directly onto the windowsill in true to life tangible sizing. These were deliberately incorporated to properly fit the artwork in the physical space.
THE RESULTS
The finished mural had its official public reveal during the "Here's Headley" annual village event, hosted on the sports green alongside the grand re-opening of the Headley sports Pavilion. The reveal was received brilliantly, drawing enthusiastic crowds of local residents, club members, and local councillors.
We mounted an interactive "I-Spy" style plaque experience where pavilion visitors of all ages spent time pointing out specific historical details, local landmarks, and hidden references in the mural.
We successfully transformed the pavilion into an inviting and inspiring hub for events, council meetings and match days.
"Headley Parish Council commissioned Aidan after a long search to find a mural artist who fully understood our requirements and we are so glad we did. Aidan’s vision is brilliantly creative and his first draft of an idea knocked us out! He was very accommodating of our small changes required, and his pain-staking attention to detail was impressive. He never let up until he was satisfied. We would recommend Aidan and Jumpstart Studios without reservation."
