THE BRIEF
To design and transform a budget Vauxhall Zafira into an unmissable head-turner for the Dover to Benidorm Banger Rat Run, a multi-day road rally through Europe with strict vehicle age and price caps. We were to create a bold, custom hand-painted design maximise visibility, engage spectators along the route, and drive donations for Sands charity.
Sands (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity) commissioned the dedicated charity rally vehicle, a customised Vauxhall Zafira, to enter the Dover to Benidorm "Banger Rat Run". The objective was to transform a standard budget vehicle into an unmissable mobile billboard, driving campaign visibility, social engagement, and direct donations across a multi-country European rally.

THE BRIEF

The objective was to transform a standard budget vehicle into an unmissable mobile billboard, driving campaign visibility, social engagement, and direct donations across a multi-country European rally.
THE CHALLENGE
To succeed on the rally, the build needed to deliver maximum visual impact within the banger rally budget limits, creating a professional, attention grabbing custom livery that stands out among hundreds of competing cars.
The exterior required surface preparation and specialised painting techniques to ensure the hand-finished artwork could withstand thousands of miles of high-speed highway driving, rain, sun, and grime. Visually, the design had to strike a careful balance between the wild spirit of the event and the respectful, high-impact branding demanded by Sands, keeping the charity’s mission and donation calls-to-action front and center without feeling misplaced.
THE SOLUTION
We strategically navigated the artwork around existing body features, windows, sponsor logos, and rally decals to make full, effective use of the Zafira’s large side panels.
The exterior featured a bold, asymmetrical graphic scheme: Side A displayed a cartoon rat character paying homage to the "Rat Run" theme, while Side B showcased a vibrant beer-themed design to offer spectators two distinct visual angles, all tied together by checkered flag patterns wrapping the front and rear bumpers.
Sands charity messaging took centre stage with official logos, QR codes and donation callouts positioned on flat surfaces such as the hood and side panels, with contrasting backgrounds for maximum legibility over the underlying artwork.
The vehicle was transformed with custom wide fenders and flared wheel arches for a wider, race-ready stance, complemented by an aggressive rear wing spoiler that completed its dynamic profile. Finally, the entire bodywork was prepped with specialised primers and finished with high-durability clear coats, safeguarding the hand-painted finish across every mile of the Europe route.
THE RESULTS
The Sands Zafira successfully completed the entire 1,500+ mile journey from Dover to Benidorm with all custom body modifications and hand-painted artwork fully intact. Thanks to its striking custom artwork, the vehicle became one of the most photographed and shared entries on the rally, bringing Sands’ vital mission to international audiences across multiple European checkpoints and driving steady online donations, resulting in a raised total of £4000. Ultimately, the project delivered a proven campaign impact, demonstrating how a commissioned banger rally can leverage custom paint projects to maximise public outreach.
